When should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time?
It is vital that your child is examined early so that we can diagnose any developing problems. Ideally this should be at least around two years of age for the initial check.
One of the many benefits of early visits is that your child will associate each visit as a pleasurable and fun experience rather than having to visit when they require treatment or are in pain.
From the age of two, most children have a mouth full of baby teeth which you should assist your child in cleaning.
It is important that you teach your child that brushing is a regular routine to their day. Small, soft brushes can be purchased and it is strongly recommended that you assist your child in brushing up until the age of around 7 as younger children lack the dexterity to complete the task effectively.
Your child’s regular visits may involve:
- Tooth brushing instruction
- Full mouth examinations and decay testing
- Discussion about diet and eating habits
- Polishing of the teeth
- Restorations or sealants if necessary
You are welcome to attend with your child, reassuring them that the visit is a fun filled experience.
